Drug Actions and Interactions Review

It is my personal pleasure to write this review of Drug Actions and Interactions. Dr. Choe has had a 30 year reputation of comprehensively teaching pharmacology to medical students. I was one of his students in 1984 and I am currently a practicing primary care physician board certified in internal medicine and also on the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
His lectures always came from his own ideas rather than following a specific text book. He always reviewed the relevant anatomy, biochemistry, and pathophysiology as part of his lecture before presenting the pharmacology topics of the day.
The advice the medical students who were doing their clinical rotations after finishing the basic sciences gave to the students just starting the basic science courses always included: "Make sure you pay attention to Dr. Choe, if you do well in his course, you can pass Part I of the Boards."
This book presents practical pharmacology information in a unique configuration. Most texts of pharmacy teach drugs according to their chemical category. Dr. Choe has organized this book by disease states, a very similar strategy to how he presented our lectures. His style makes learning the information easier as it is presented in a logical user friendly format.

Drug Actions and Interactions is a handy easy-to-access guide to understanding what major drugs are available for specific diseases, how selected drugs produce therapeutic benefits, side effects that may occur when taking these drugs, and which drugs and supplements should not be taken in combination with each other.

Applying the 300 most often prescribed drugs in the United States to more than 80 common disorders, Drug Actions and Interactions discusses each drug's mechanism of action, side effects, and drug interactions. Molecular structures of medications are also included to help you understand their mechanisms of action. Coverage includes drugs that act on the major systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine, neuronal); bone, muscle, skin, and joints; and general health.

You will also find an appendix listing major drugs currently in use in each therapeutic classification. Thirty-two additional appendices detail interaction between a therapeutic group of drugs and an individual drug or group of drugs, such as interactions of beta-blockers, alpha-blockers, calcium-blockers, etc.
