The Sinus Sourcebook Review

Dr. Deborah F. Rosin, M.D. (Princeton University; University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine), a private practice ear, nose and throat specialist and clinical instructor in the Department of Surgery at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has written a text that makes clear and understandable all aspects of sinus health. Designed for the lay reader and detailed without being overwhelming, _The Sinus Sourcebook_ is a compact yet comprehensive handbook, and practical self-guiding resource for understanding the sinuses, approaching the problems, and maintaining peak sinus health.
Two of several strong points in this useful volume are its accessible writing, and topical layout. Divided into ten chapters, most are interspersed with profiles of real patients, their symptoms, and treatments. Beginning with a thorough introduction to the sinuses, what they are and how they work, the author helps clarify whether one's symptoms are sinusitis or sinus related. Subsequent chapters cover: the common cold, often a precursor to sinus infection (how to identify and treat it; suggestions for useful over-the-counter medications); sinusitis (how it develops; distinction from common cold; difference between acute and chronic sinusitis; treatments); nasal obstruction (anatomic, non-anatomic); allergies (often confused with sinus problems and a potential starting point for sinus infection; testing; diagnosis); headache (true sinus headache; cluster; migraine); sinus disease in children (factors specific to a pediatric population; "runny-nose children"; at risk children); medications for the nose and sinuses (over-the-counter and prescription); choosing a doctor (when to see a doctor and what type; checking credentials; what to expect from the physician); sinus surgery (procedures; options).
Dr. Deborah Rosin makes no attempt to steer her readers into the doctor's office (specialist or otherwise) but, instead, emphasizes nonprescription medications and other self-help measures (including minor mention of vitamins, herbs, and homeopathic cures). Supplemented with a wealth of resources (Internet addresses; toll-free numbers; glossary; index), this book encourages the reader to actively participate in preventing, treating, and addressing their sinus problems, and in maintaining sinus health. _The Sinus Sourcebook_ is a valuable addition to the works in this field.
